第10週 2015.5.1 CULTURAL INTERPRETATIONS

我們這週將聚焦在兩個主題上: 
一是Paul Ricoeur的「文本詮釋學」(作者、理解、詮釋、文本) 
二是Clifford Geertz的「文化」概念(文本analogy與「翻譯」、體系、ethos、深描、deep play(孝宏貼文))

‘Understanding’, not ‘explaining’, “natives’ inner lives is more like grasping a proverb, catching an allusion, seeing a joke—or, as I have suggested, reading a poem—than it is like achieving communion.” Interpretive anthropology does not aim to know what native culture is, but this claim is not one of epistemological impossibility, but a methodological and conceptual shift in what culture is. Through deep play and thick description, ethnographic task of writing culture into texts, but text not as mere sentences on paper, but as systems of symbols and thus creating more space for interpretation.
For Ricoeur, the distinction between understanding (interpreting) and explanation is what differentiates social sciences and hard sciences. The project of understanding a text lays on the preliminary opposition between speech and writing. Writing takes place where speech is silent, or written because it is not said. Text as discourse fixed by writing emancipates and replaces the site of speech. The relationship between the speaker and interlocutor to that of author and writer is also different because there’s no dialogue but interception. The lack of direct engagement as a result of a upheaval of of the referential function or webs of signification is where the author and the authority of the ethnography manifests. For the reader, one can remain in the suspense of the text or return the text to dialogue.

Sorry, this is about as far as I got, just don’t have enough time to read and reflect…. With reading from last semester, I am more curious on the boarder theoretical framework, history of hermeneutics and how it relates to structuralism and post-structuralism i.e. Derrida. Would you also please briefly outline the role of language and interpretation in Heidegger, Gadamer, Ricoeur and Geertz.
